“Mecha-Floral” Mosaic Kitchen Backsplash

Commissioned mosaic tile back splash for a custom kitchen.

The pieces include a 3-panel centerpiece behind the stove and counter area to each side, a single panel for a kitchen side counter, and a matching insert piece for a china cabinet in the dining area. The design is a traditional conservative floral design inspired by old seed catalog illustrations, but with a twist of inlay objects including vintage brass clock and compass parts, metal gears, copper wire, beach glass and more. The color palette is muted and conservative with the exception of the floral centerpieces, where bursts of yellows, oranges, reds and greens along with the brass and copper, play against the texture of blue & white and red & white broken china that make up a traditional vase and tablecloth still life motif.

After making exacting templates on-site, in Saratoga, CA, the panels were created in the studio using hand cut ceramic tile set in Reflex Ultra-Premium Latex-Modified thin set mortar over Wonderboard Lite 7/16” backer board and grouted with french grey Bostik TruColor urethane grout. Bostik TruColor is Green LEED certified, anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, anti-fungus and transports well since it hardens like skateboard wheels. All panel edges are finished with Schluter Systems black anodized aluminum trim. The panels were easily transported to site and installed with hidden clips and a little silicone adhesive.
